Irish Medical Times: President of RCSI Bahrain resigns By Dara Gantly. The President of RCSI Bahrain, Prof Tom Collins, has resigned following the cancellation of a conference on medical ethics due to take place next month. The event — organised by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and co-sponsored by the RCSI — was due to take place on April 10 and 11 to discuss the challenges faced by medical staff in politically unstable contexts. It was cancelled because of a lack of assurances from the authorities, MSF announced last weekend. It is understood Prof Collins, who had been centrally involved in planning the conference, resigned his position on Monday, but will be remaining in the post to allow for a transition of leadership. IMT was unable to contact Prof Collins at time of going to press. In a statement, the RCSI in Dublin said Prof Collins had been considering his position in Bahrain for some time, but that with the delay in the advancement of the conference, he “has decided that now is the right time for him to step down”. The former interim President of NUI Maynooth joined RCSI Bahrain in October 2011, after revelations were published in IMT that students were forced to swear an oath of loyalty to the Bahraini Royal Family and sign a non-protest declaration — actions for which RCSI CEO Prof Cathal Kelly “unreservedly apologised”.
