Periodic Server Spikes and Regular Double Posts
 

Hi all,

For some time, my co-admin and I have been having some issues with our forum. The main symptoms are some occasional sluggishness, and this will result in the site temporarily going down a few times a month. In working with our host on this issue, they have tried several things (most recently increasing the MaxClients limit from 150 to 180), but these measure have not solved the problem. On a lesser note, I've noticed that my site frequently has double posts, and I'd be surprised if they're not a symptom of the underlying problem(s).

In any event, below is what my host recently had to say they now believe the problem is:

Your issue is a lot of joins, and tmp tables that are pushing the disk I/O to it's limits. I advise consulting a certified mysql developer to find the exact queries causing the trouble. You may also want to consider turning on the slow queries log for a day or two, as this will hold some vital information that will help them.

These queries could be in your site code, but most often are in cms plugins and or themes. Updating these faulty plugins, or better yet disabling them and finding more efficient alternatives, will be the most effective way of stopping these slow queries from bogging down your vps.

We do have some custom addons from vBulletin.org but nothing I would consider excessive. In short, my host believes our problem is a result of one or more of these, and they certainly may be right. I realize this site is for support of stock vBulletin, but I'm also not positive this isn't a configuration issue (and not one of the addons), so that's why I'm posting here instead of vBulletin.org. If you do not believe it's a configuration issue, please let me know if you suspect it could be one or more of the following addons we have installed:

We also have the Facebook product/app installed that allows you to browse and post to the site within Facebook's site.
