What happens when converting from phpbb3 - 100 000+ files in one directory

We have a forum running phpbb 3.0.7-PL1

Size of posted attachments: 21.83 GiB

At the moment the problem is that in the attachment directory there are over 100 000 files. This is getting too much for us (backups are a nightmare) and for our host. We simply want less files in one single directory.

We would like to convert this forum to VB

I DOexpect all forums, private messages, users, posts, including their posted attachments to be converted properly

I also DO expect VB while converting to spread the 100 000 + attachements over multiple directories

I DO NOT expect layout and various mods to be converted properly

Is this a realistic expectation ? Or . . . . ?
