Concurrent MySQL connections - what are reasonable limits?
 

I'm looking seriously at DownTownHost to host my vBulletin forum and other sites. I've learned from reading other posts here to pay attention to concurrent MySQL connections.

DTH tells me that their shared hosting plans limit the number of simultaneous MySQL connections to 50.

Also, if you exceed that number, the next connection over 50 will be rejected.

If you want a package the permits more than 50 simultaneous MySQL connections, you have to move to semi-dedicated hosting, where the limit is 100. Anyone over 100 will be rejected.

Does that sound right to you folks? I thought there was usually a little more flexibility built in to these plans. It seems to me that I've read here about sites that have 100-150 concurrent connections that are still using shared hosting, and wondering if they should move up to VPS or semi-dedicated.

I'm asking because I would like to find a host where I can stay for a long time. With these limits, though, if my forum reached 101 connections with any frequency, I would have to move up to a dedicated server already. That seems like a very low ceiling.

What do you think - are these reasonable limits, or should I keep looking?
