Al-Wefaq SG: Our Struggle Surpasses Retreat and the People will No More be Subjugated

Al-Wefaq Secretary-General Shaikh Ali Salman emphasized that “The national struggle in Bahrain has surpassed the phase of stop or retreat. The situation in Bahrain will not be restored to the pre-revolution situation. The choice to subjugate people is no longer possible”.
“Visits to and communications with the international community is important to exchange opinions and views. Egypt has become an important centre after the revolution, and we hope it returns to its active position in the Arab world”, Salman said in an open meeting in Ma’ameer village on Sunday 14th October 2012.

He added, “the Arab world has rich resources which can be invested to produce billions on daily basis. Arab people are not idiots, they built and led many ancient civilizations. The Arab world has a very important geographic location, and if freedoms, real democracies and modern state structures are given to Arabs, outstanding civilized achievements will be produced and they will receive awards. Arab nations must regain what were forcibly taken”.
“Although the human right issue is important, it remains not as fundamental as the political issue. Thus, once there is a government in which the will of the people is represented in, torture will be wiped out. Give us an elected government and nobody will talk about “travesty of justice” or “black days”. Give us an elected government and all human rights’ issues will be resolved; or will be at their least. The elected government is not able to violate human rights, whilst the non-elected can’t respect human rights”, Al-Wefaq Secretary-General stated.

“The Nile Center for Economic and Strategic Studies has issued a statement condemning what happened today. All the parties we have met in Egypt expressed their respect and support to the Bahraini opposition demands. Today’s irrational measures proved to the Egyptian people the justice of our cause. This is a clear evidence of the opposition’s credibility”.

A Steady Speech vs. Deception

He also mentioned that “The opposition has a steady speech vs. official deception. They misleadingly claim that Al-Wefaq is an obstacle to initiate a political dialogue, while we have always reached out to everybody who seriously attempts to address the ongoing constitutional and political crisis”.

“If it will be a serious, genuine and fruitful dialogue, it will require that all prisoners of conscience; including the political figures to be released”.
When he came across the Manama Document, he pointed out that “it represents pivotal demands: an elected government, a full-privileged parliament, Security Services that reflect all components of the Bahrain society, independent judiciary. These are all just demands and we hope and actively work to achieve them”.

“The opposition activities are able to stop projects that aim to eradicate this revolution, protests and demonstrations together with meetings and visits impose our cause on the world to be discussed and resolved."
Al-Wefaq SG said that the international community has a balanced view of the situation, and even if it had taken some positive steps like the Bassiouni committee and the condemnation of verdicts, it still may be held back by its interests. However, it is moving slowly towards meeting the will of the people in this region, especially when a state is neither reforming nor maintaining a stable political situation. Therefore, we must bring more attention to our cause and raise our legitimate demands for democracy, freedom and human rights, he said.

He emphasized on the peaceful approach and clarified that the opposition has recently been communicating with the Justice Minister only, unfortunately to find him bashing back. However, he further clarified that the opposition supports the idea of dialogue with the authority to meet the rightful demands of the people.

Three Scenarios

Salman said that there are three possible seniors in the coming days; the current situation might stay as it is and continue to drain the capabilities and opportunities of the state, or we could slip into either one of the Syrian or Libyan situation, we don't hope so but we do not hold all the cards. The third scenario would be a genuine national consensus in which nobody is oppressed and power-sharing is imposed in order for human rights to be respected, and this is the achievable option.
"let us unify under equality and social justice for equal distribution of wealth", he said.

Demanding Justice is No Crime

Salman stated that the Bahrainis must take the challenge to develop their homeland and prevent any bloodshed. He said, "the world will respect this nation if its citizens are respected and given their rights, the international community has expressed its views in Geneva emphasizing on necessary reform in Bahrain… Whether Salman is martyred or arrested or anyone else is, does not mean that the revolution will end before the people get their rights"
"Demanding justice is no crime," he said, "this is an essential and legitimate demand. Our demand for an elected government, an end to discrimination and gerrymandering have no relation whatsoever with foreign interference"
