Final communiqué of "Liberty and Democracy" mass rally – August 31st 2012

Opposition refuses to be dictated, The people must write their constitution and elect the government

Bahrain- Friday 31st August, 2012 – at Budaya Streets, west of the capital Manama

Opposition societies have been following the ongoing multi- crackdowns which have been undertaken by the regime. Since the holy month of Ramadan, even protests with pre-notifications were banned in order to tighten the political life against the opposition.

All opposition demonstrations were confronted with brutal, excessive and outlawed force in an attempt to impose more restrictions against peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations. Such restrictions arrogantly violate the universal right of freedom of assembly.

Again, we are gathering today to stress that the opposition in Bahrain; which represents the popular pro-democracy movement erupted in February 14th, refuses any kind of dictation imposed from any side.

Opposition societies have the absolute right to organize peaceful demonstrations in all areas of Bahrain; including the Capital Manama.

The opposition societies warn the regime not to politicize the judiciary by issuing unjust and revengeful convictions against prisoners of conscience; especially the detained political figures, who are practically held as hostages by the regime. The opposition also stresses that all prisoners of conscience must be released immediately as concluded by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI). Thus, rejecting to release them breaks the promises made by the regime as the contents of the report have been admitted and the regime promised the world to implement its recommendations.

The opposition societies in Bahrain emphasize that the repressive approach adopted by the regime will never stop the popular pro-democracy struggle. The regime's attempts to tighten and restrict the national political activity are arrogantly ongoing. Moreover, the revengeful travel-ban list against activists along with other humiliating measures will motivate the opposition to insist more on its legitimate demands which are clearly stated in the Manama Document. The opposition morally and politically adheres to this document which represents the opposition's views for the political solution to the ongoing crisis in Bahrain.

The opposition underlined in the Manama Document that the people own the exclusive right to write their democratic constitution in which the freely elected legislative authority exclusively has full supervisory and lawmaking privileges; along with an elected government that fairly represents the will of the people. It also includes other basic rights for any pro-democracy people who look for freedom, dignity, social justice and a civilized democratic state. It mentions the just electoral constituencies, the independent judiciary and security that should be provided for all the people in Bahrain.

Opposition societies in Bahrain call international organizations to seriously take their humanitarian and moral responsibilities to support the people of Bahrain; who look for a permanent solution for the political and constitutional impasse, escalated since February 14th 2011.
