Statement issued by Opposition parties following a mass rally held on Friday 11th May, 2012:
“The people of Bahrain have chosen democracy, and will not surrender”
http://alwefaq.net/index.php?show=ne...rticle&id=6462

The people of Bahrain have overcome the regime’s repression and will not give up their right to freedom.

The same state-run media, that was accused of spreading hatred during the so-called ‘National Safety Law’, is once again playing the same shameful role in an attempt to ‘divide and conquer’ the people of Bahrain. But the people have proven to the international community their unwavering call for democracy and remain determined to continue their path towards a dignified future.

The latest tightening of security measures continues to worsen the situation in Bahrain, with the regime maintaining it’s systematic repression against peaceful protesters. This policy of the regime reveals their true intention of arbitrary arrests, torture and targeting those expressing their right to freedom of expression.

Hereby, The international community must come out of its silence and take a serious stand to stop the regime's violence against the people of Bahrain.

The international community should handle the situation in Bahrain with the same standards it has treated other movements of their Arab Spring, by rejecting autocracy and dictatorship in favour of democratic rule.
The suppression of freedom of speech has become all the more apparent in Bahrain, with the attacking of protests in villages that oppose the regime. All protests and sit-ins in the capital Manama remain banned, whilst security forces arbitrarily use force and oppression against protesters without any legal justification.

The arrest of human rights activist Nabeel Rajab, for nothing but expressing his view, and the constant detention of Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, who’s life is in danger having been on hunger strike for more than 90 days, are proof that the regime is ignoring calls for reform. Likewise, the continuing trial of political leaders and activists along with the detention of four women, are just a few examples of the real intent of the regime.

Between 21st-23rd May the United Nations Human Rights Office will host it’s universal periodic review of Bahrain in respect to human rights. This will provide an opportunity for the Bahraini human rights movement to showcase to the world the suffering and persecution faced by the Bahraini people.

We remain committed to our rightful and legitimate demands for democracy, which must be realised through an elected government, a parliament with full legislative powers, fair electoral constituencies, an independent judiciary and security for all citizens.

We emphasise on the peaceful approach adopted by the pro-democracy movement in achieving these demands and condemn violence whomever is responsible.

The principle of peace is highly respected by the Pearl Revolution in its struggle for justice, freedom and democracy. This valuable approach is the most and only effective way to oppose the unjustifiable brutality that is being practiced consistently by Bahrain Security Forces against those seeking democracy.
