My community of 40+ thousand has declared social groups useless because they do not act like forums. I have no idea why they were designed like this. Somewhere along the line someone at vBulletin must have said "social groups do not need to be all things to all people, it should just be a light weight simple system". Well, whoever said that is not living in the real world and running a large forum because any vbull owner that does and tries to run social groups successfully gets constantly hassled by their membership "what is wrong with the social groups, why aren't they like normal forums?" "can you please tell me how to add attachments in the social groups" x 1,000. I think the best solution to this is make social groups more of a 'social forums' type application so they have useful functionality. At the moment it's not much better than a shoutbox. I can't blame my members one bit for ignoring them, I would too. They attempt to start a mini community of their own and can't even attach files. I'm close to posting a disclaimer in the social group area "*Please note basically all you can do it post text, wasn't my idea". Attachment functionality is the main show stopper for me. I have a technical community that like to share a variety of attached documents. Initially they created almost 100 social groups but now the area is dead because there's just no functionality there. It has soooooo much potential, could be the most popular section of my forums if it had more grunt.
