Forum Is It Just Me?

Hi Folks.

I wonder if someone can point me to a "really simple" educational on maintaining vBulletin forums. I've been designing and building my own websites for years now, but there's just something about my one and only forum that seems to confuse the socks off me

I'm always getting emails about having to update this, or patch up that, upgrade something else, but because there are so many different versions and functions out there, I just seem to get puzzled by it all. Here's my latest dilemma.

When logging into my Admin cP, I see this message:

Latest version available: 4.2.0 Patch Level 3. You are currently running vBulletin version 4.1.12 Patch Level 3.

Well that all seems quite straight forward. It looks as though they're telling me that I'm not running the latest version and I need to download certain files and overwrite existing ones. At least that's how I read it?

So I do that and the next thing I know is that I'm unable to start a new thread. I can add a post to an existing thread, and I can delete posts or modify existing ones, but when trying to add a new post I get the following error:

Good job I backed up my files before overwriting with the new ones, which means I'm back to where I started.

Another time (can't quite remember when it was), I updated with a new security patch and since that day I've not been able to access Admon cP without deliting the .htacess file first. I then replace this file once I've finished in Admin cP. After employing 2 professionals, neither of who could resolve the issue, I've since given up on that, especially as I can get in using the above trick, although it does disrupt the site for the few minutes that the .htacess is missing from the server.

So there we have it. I dread these emails telling my I need to update with a new patch because I never know what's going to happen. Usually it's fine, but as you can see, sometimes it's not.

I'm probably confusing things myself and am the cause of the problems, but I just don't know, and there lays the problem.

So if anyone can point me to a tutorial that explains these things (as if written for a 5 year old), please share the link so that I can get on enjoying the forum and not dreading its maintenance
