Sayed Hadi Sayed Alawi after getting shot
21 Sep 2012
The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses its grave concern over the security forces’ excessive use of force continuously since the past year in response to peaceful pro-democracy protests. This has resulted to more than a 100 deaths and several hundreds of injuries.
In a recent case on September 4 2012, Sayed Hadi Sayed Alawi (24 year old) lost one of his kidneys by a direct shot of a sonic grenade from a very close range , following an attack by Bahraini security forces on a protest in the area of Karranah where he resides. According to a family member, Sayed Hadi was shot at from a very close range while trying to enter the house. He was provided with first aid at first but due to the severity of his injury he was taken to the emergency room at Salmaniya Medical Complex where he had an urgent surgery.
Security forces prevented his family members from seeing him at the hospital except for his father, who later found out from one of the doctors that Sayed Hadi’s kidney was removed. Also, his liver and a number of his ribs were damaged. He was also informed that his son will need another surgery in the next two days to check on the condition of the bleeding[1] . On Saturday September 15, his family reported that Sayed Hadi’s health condition was deteriorating and that he was to be moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His family expressed concern over the fact that he is still under anaesthesia for over a week and they were not informed of the reason behind this.[2]

In a different case, Sadiq Rabea [3], the elected member of the Municipalities Council, has been injured with shotgun on the upper left part of his body after he participated in a peaceful protest in Sitra on September 9 2012. He testified that the riot police have fired shotgun, tear gas and sonic grenades on protesters and that several other people were injured apart from himself. He lost his consciousness due to the pain and bleeding, and later was taken to the hospital where the public prosecution subjected him to interrogation immediately after he awoke. Some of the birdshots were removed from his body, however many remained in as the doctor stated that they cannot remove the shots because they were all situated in one part of his body and lodged deep inside. His ear was also injured with the birdshots, which made it difficult for him to hear, causing a sharp pain despite the painkillers he was given.[4]

The use of shotgun and tear gas among other weapons has resulted in the death of around 80 people, the last of who was a 16 year old. Hussam Al Haddad[5] was killed in August 2012 with direct shots from a shotgun fired by security forces. Dozens of injuries are reported on a daily basis and most of them are being treated in houses due to fear of getting arrested at hospitals.
The Bahrain Center for Human Rights calls on the government of Bahrain to stop its use of excessive force in response to the continued peaceful protests, and to consider a meaningful solution to resolve the persistent political issues of instability in the country.
We also call the international community to:
- Stop supplying the government of Bahrain with arms that are used against peaceful protesters, causing injuries and deaths among them.
- Intervene to secure safe access of hospitals and proper medical treatment for injured pro-democracy protesters without being subjected to any threats of arrest or prosecution.

[3]Sadiq Rabea is a representative of 10 blocks in Sitra, and he won the highest percentage of votes in the 2010 elections (90%) which is equal to 9956 votes, but his membership was dropped from the Municipalities Council in 2011 along with other 3 members after they were accused with “committing abuses that harm public interest, and defaming the reputation of Bahrain”. These accusations were on background of participating and supporting the popular pro-democracy protests in Bahrain starting February 2011.
